Will My Dog Be OK in Kennels for a Week?
Many dogs can stay in boarding for a week and settle well, but there is no single answer that applies to every dog.
Many dogs can stay in boarding for a week and settle well, but there is no single answer that applies to every dog. How your dog copes depends on their personality, previous experiences, routine, the boarding environment and how their individual needs are managed.
For owners, the thought of leaving a dog for seven days can feel much bigger than leaving them for a night. For the dog, however, the quality and consistency of their daily experience matters enormously.
How Long Does It Take a Dog to Settle Into Boarding?
Some dogs investigate their new surroundings and appear comfortable very quickly. Others need longer.
A dog may initially be quieter, more alert or less interested in food while they adjust. A good boarding provider should observe the individual dog rather than expecting every dog to behave in the same way.
Maintaining familiar routines where practical can also help make the transition less dramatic.
Is a Week Too Long for a First Stay?
Not necessarily, although owners of dogs who are particularly sensitive to change may wish to discuss a shorter introductory stay first.
This can allow the dog to experience the environment and gives the boarding provider an opportunity to learn more about them before a longer holiday.
Whether this is appropriate depends on the individual dog, so it is something worth discussing rather than following a rigid rule.
Choosing the Right Boarding Environment
A dog that thrives in a busy social environment may have very different requirements from one that prefers calm surroundings and personal space.
Ask how many dogs are cared for, what happens during the day, how dogs are introduced, where they sleep and how the provider responds when a dog appears unsettled.
If your dog is nervous or reactive, explain this fully. Our boarding requirements set out what we need to know. A responsible provider needs an accurate picture so they can decide whether their environment is suitable.
Keeping Your Dog's Routine Familiar
Dogs often benefit from predictability.
Providing accurate information about feeding times, exercise, medication, sleep and everyday habits can help a boarding provider keep parts of your dog's normal routine consistent.
Bring any permitted familiar items the provider recommends and make sure they have everything they need to care for your dog correctly.
What Happens When My Dog Comes Home?
Some dogs return home and immediately fall back into their normal routine. Others may be tired after the change in environment and activity.
Give your dog time to settle back at home and contact your boarding provider if anything concerns you.
At Love of Dogs Boarding, we believe successful boarding starts with understanding the dog in front of us. Our focus is not on forcing every dog into the same routine. It is on creating an experience that considers the dog's individual needs and aims to reduce unnecessary stress.
