What Is the Average Price to Put a Dog in Kennels in the UK?

The cost of putting a dog into kennels or boarding in the UK can vary considerably.

The cost of putting a dog into kennels or boarding in the UK can vary considerably. The price you pay will depend on where you live, the type of accommodation, the level of individual care provided, the size and needs of your dog and whether extras such as additional walks, medication or one to one attention are included.

Because prices change and different boarding providers include different things, the most useful comparison is not simply the nightly rate. It is what your dog will actually experience while you are away.

Why Do Dog Boarding Prices Vary So Much?

Traditional kennels, home boarding and more specialist boarding environments can be very different services.

One provider may care for a larger number of dogs at the same time, while another may deliberately limit numbers so that each dog receives more individual attention. Some dogs settle easily into a busy environment. Others need more time, space, patience and consistency.

Location also affects price, as do staffing levels, facilities and the amount of time spent with each dog.

What Is Included in the Price?

Before comparing two boarding prices, ask what is actually included.

Find out about exercise, feeding routines, sleeping arrangements, supervision and how much individual interaction dogs receive. If your dog has particular behavioural, emotional or routine needs, ask how these will be accommodated.

It is also worth asking whether there are additional charges for medication, extra walks, particular diets, peak periods or other requirements.

Should Price Be the Main Consideration?

Price matters, but for many owners the more important question is whether the environment is right for their dog.

A cheaper option is not good value if your dog finds the environment overwhelming. Equally, a higher price does not automatically mean a boarding provider is right for your individual dog.

Look at how the business operates, ask questions and be open about your dog's personality and needs.

What If My Dog Is Nervous or Reactive?

Dogs that are nervous, reactive or easily overwhelmed may need more consideration when choosing boarding.

Noise, unfamiliar dogs, a sudden change in routine and a new environment can all be challenging for some dogs. This does not necessarily mean they cannot be boarded. It means finding an environment and people who understand their needs is particularly important.

At Love of Dogs Boarding, our approach focuses on reducing unnecessary stress and getting to know the individual dog rather than expecting every dog to cope in exactly the same way.

Choosing Boarding That Is Right for Your Dog

Rather than beginning with “What is the cheapest place?”, consider asking “Where is my dog most likely to feel comfortable and be properly understood?”

Visit where possible, discuss your dog's normal routine and tell the boarding provider about anything that may affect their stay. The right provider should want this information.

For some owners, finding the right environment is worth travelling further for. Peace of mind while you are away comes from knowing you have chosen care based on your dog's needs rather than price alone.
